Diagnosis: head compressed, 18-27% of body length; snout pointed, its tip and angles with prominent spiny scutes, sub-orbital ridge sharp and distinct for whole length, but underside of snout scaleless; chin barbel small, up to about half eye diameter; mouth inferior, rather small, the cleft not reaching to eye centre, teeth pointed, in numerous broad bands in both jaws. First dorsal fin with 11-12 finrays, the second finray serrated, its origin a little behind pectoral base; second dorsal fin well separated from first, with very short finrays; pectoral fin with 19-21 finrays; pelvic fin with 7-8 finrays. Scales with about 10 rows of large and broad spinules. Pyloric caeca 10, small. Colour: brown, mouth and gill cavity darker. Size: to at least 48 cm TL.
Habitat: benthopelagic at 1,200-2,600 m. Food: small benthic invertebrates. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Atlantic, northward to Shetland Channel, the Faroes, off south-western Iceland and Denmark Strait, also Medlterranean. Elsewhere, southward to the Canaries.
