Diagnosis: D 9 10 (11), A 9-10. Scales in longitudinal series (23) 25-28. Colour: male bluish, with 10-15 dark bands alternating with silvery lines; caudal fin with 2-5 dark bands; female with 3-4 series of lateral spots, caudal fin with 1-2 bands, often indistinct. Size: 5 cm (males smaller).

Habitat: lagoons, freshwater canals and pools with abundant vegetation. Food: mainly small invertebrates. Reproduction: April-August.

Distribution: southern and eastern Spain; western Algeria.
