Diagnosis: barbel with a round to ovoid terminal bulb bearing a distal appendage that is curved or straight, longer than bulb in most, broad basally, tapering to a slender point distally, with prominent fringing near the bulb and a few filaments along the appendage. Photophores in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 30 or more. Colour: head and body black; one or more small white spots on upper side ('shoulder') behind head. Size: to almost 25 cm.

Distribution: northward to Madeira and 33° N. Elsewhere, off Zaire and South Africa and across the North Atlantic between about 23° and 33° N; also Pacific Ocean.
