Diagnosis: barbel with a small terminal bulb, much reduced in large specimens, bearing a slender appendage as long as or longer than bulb and forked at its distal end. Photophores in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 19-21. Colour: head and body black; no white spots on upper side behind head. Size: to 25 cm.

Distribution: northward to Azores. Madeira. Elsewhere. the Canaries and across the North Atlantic between about 23° and 36° N.
