Accepted name: Photonectes braueri (Zugmayer, 1913) (updated 2009-06-25)

Diagnosis: barbel with a spherical or ovoid terminal bulb, much reduced in large specimens, bearing a small, bulbous appendage at tip. Photophores in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 22-24. Colour: head and body black; no white spots on upper side behindhead. Size: to more than 28 cm.

Distribution: northward to just north of Madeira. Elsewhere, southward to 20° N; across the North Atlantic between about 23° and 32° N, extending to 39° N between 30° and 40° W; South Atlantic south of about 8° S to 40° S; western Indian Ocean.
