Diagnosis: barbel about 1/4 to almost 1/2 of SL, its stem slender, unpigmented except for a row of small, black spots, without branches; terminal bulb single and long ovoid, constricted, or double, the tip with a group of up to 8 filaments shorter than, to twice as long as, distal bulb. No belly groove. Pectoral finrays 3; pelvic finrays 7. Photophores of lateral row partly in pairs, 33-37 inventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV). Colour: head and body black; no round white spots on sides of body. Size: to 225 cm.

Distribution: north-east of the Azores, Madeira, off Gibraltar, and southward. Elsewhere, across the North Atlantic between about 20° and 35° N, north-eastern Atlantic to about 10° N, south-eastern Atlantic from about 5° to 30° S, south-western Atlantic from about 21° to 27° S.
