Diagnosis: barbel 5-7 times in SL, its stem pigmented, with five branches of variable complexity arising well before the terminal bulb; terminal bulb with stem pigment extending about halfway out on one side, the bulb moderately constricted distally, with its tip appearing bent; a single, long filament arising from near tip of bulb. A groove in belly about as long as barbel. Pectoral finrays 2, closely bound together in black membrane; pelvic finrays 7. Photophores of lateral row evenly spaced, not in pairs, 28-32 in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV). Colour: head and body black; no round, white spots on sides. Size: to about 17 cm.

Distribution: only from the type locality, 30° 17' N, 20° 44' W. Elsewhere, across the North Atlantic between about 20° and 35° N; south-western Atlantic from 21° to 25° S; also, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
