Diagnosis: row of photophores beginning above anal fin and ending on tail (AC) curved upward behind anal fin base; serial photophores in lateral row (OA) 40-46, usually 41-44, of which 17-22 (usually 19 or more) behind pelvic fin insertion (VAL); 64-68 photophores in ventral series to tail (IC). Fangs in upper and lower jaws well developed, much longer than other teeth and straight. Barbel tip with a bulbous black proximal part (swelling less apparent in large specimens) and a less wide, pale distal part, the latter usually bearing one or two filaments and becoming much longer than wide in large specimens; pale post-orbital luminous organ double, with small anterior and larger posterior parts. Colour: head and body black. Size: to more than 350 mm SL.

Distribution: western Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean north of about 40° N, extending to 66° N between Greenland and Iceland, but apparently not entering the Norwegian Sea. Elsewhere, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean south of about 35° S and reaching 65° S.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. None known.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
