Diagnosis: serial photophores in lateral row (OA) 42-48, of which 25-29 behind pelvic fin insertion (VAL); 62-70 photophores in ventral row to tail (IC); ventral row curving slightly outward between pectoral fin bases. Barbel with swollen tip contrastingly black on one side. Dorsal finrays 15-17. Colour: head and body black; no well-developed pale patches. Size: to about 170 mm.

Distribution: south of 45° N. Elsewhere, across the North Atlantic north of 30° N, eastern Atlantic to about 11° S, south-western Atlantic near 30° S, Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. None known.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
