Diagnosis: serial photophores in lateral row (OA) 32-35, of which 17-20 behind pelvic fin insertion; 55-57 photophores in ventral row to tail (IC); ventral row straight between pectoral fin bases. Barbel tip widened, flat. Dorsal finrays 13-16. Colour: head and body black; all known specimens small; pale patches unknown. Size: largest known specimen less than 30 mm.

Distribution: 26-33° N, between 21° and 23° W. Elsewhere, 30-32° N, between 48° and 58° W.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. None known.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
