Diagnosis: body moderately deep, head relatively small, jaws about equal, snout not prominent, tip of lower jaw not upturned, upper jaw reaching back to level of pupil; toothless. Gillrakers 35-51. Dorsal finrays iii-iv (9)10-12, anal finrays iii-iv 9-12 (13). Scales moderate, 86-111 in lateral line. Vertebrae 61-68. Pyloric caeca 113-183. Colour: anadromous adults with back brown to light green, flanks silvery. Size: to 50 cm and 2 kg, usually less than 40 cm and I kg.

Habitat: pelagic in brackish waters (salinity 20-22%o) of coastal regions and mouths of rivers and bays. Food: planktonic crustaceans, also fish fry; no feeding during upward migration. Reproduction: entering rivers in shoals from late June to late August according to locality, sometimes reaching far upstream; spawning in September and October, returning to sea in November after spawning; young descend in summer, mature at 6-8 years.

Distribution: coasts of north-eastern Barents Sea (entering rivers from Mesen to Pechora in Clofnam area). Elsewhere, coasts and rivers of Siberia and western arctic North America, also Lake Baikal (C. autumnalis migratorius).
