Diagnosis: snout short, 15% or less of SL. Ventral fin origin about even with dorsal fin origin. Colour: generally dark. No series of dark blotches on sole. Size: to about 8.5 cm.

Habitat: Iiving mainly between 500 and 700 m, but ranging between about 300 and 800 m. Probably not a vertical migrator. Food: no data. Reproduction: females off Hawaii mature at about 6 cm. Pelagic eggs and larvae.

Distribution: mainly circumtropical but ranging to 50° N in the area.
