Diagnosis: see genus. Size: to 18 cm.

Habitat: oceanic, mesopelagic. Food: no data. Reproduction: pelagic eggs and larvae.

Distribution: rare in the southern part of the area. Perhaps circumtropical Body laterally compressed and rather short, not elongate. Eyes tubular, dorsally directed. Belly with a flat, scale-covered 'sole' that serves as a reflector for a rectal light organ. Ventral fin closer to dorsal fin than to pectoral fin. Dorsal adipose fin present.
