Diagnosis: eye more than two in head. Gill opening restricted, extending less than halfway up side of body; anal fin base longer than caudal peduncle. Scale rows along side about 50, between dorsal base and ventral base 3-4; scale pockets with dark pigment. Size: to about 20 cm.
Habitat: bathypelagic. Often caught singly, but also in small aggregations. Food: plankton. Reproduction: pelagic eggs and larvae.
Distribution: widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Caught occasionally in southern and central parts of area.
