Diagnosis:. body short, its depth about 5 1/2-6 1/2 times in total length, head about 4 1/2 times. A small adipose dorsal fin present; pectoral fins set on side of body, pre-pectoral distance 3.3-4.2 times in total length; pelvic fins below dorsal fin base, behind midpoint of body; anal fin far back, below adipose dorsal fin. Scales present. Colour: silvery, or brownish in preserved material. Size: to about 18 cm, but most specimens less than 7 cm.

Habitat: mesopelagic. Food: no data. Reproduction: winter in Mediterranean, perhaps later in Atlantic.

Distribution: western Mediterranean. also records to the south-west of Ireland. Elsewhere, perhaps at about 24° N off the coast of West Africa.
