Diagnosis: body somewhat elongate and compressed, head large, morethan 1 1/3 body length. Eye smaller than snout, in front half of head. Upper jaw membranous, without teeth, more than half length of head; gillrakers 9-11 + 1 + 15-20. Dorsal fin well behind midpoint of body, with 11-15 finrays; pectoral fins with 8-10 finrays; pelvic fins behind mid-
point of body, with 8-11 finrays; anal fin behind dorsal fin base with 11-13 finrays. Scales relatively large, 47-52 in lateral line. Colour: brownish. Size: to 30.8 cm.

Habitat: bathypelagic at 2,000-3,100 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: ovarian eggs extremely large, to 8.5 mm in diameter.

Distribution: several eastern Atlantic records between 14° 11' N and 50° 08' N. Elsewhere, off Senegal and in the eastern Pacific, from the equator to 38° 24' N.
