Diagnosis: snout a little pointed, greater than eye diameter; hind border of eye much before midpoint of head; tip of upper jaw reaching to or beyond hind border of eye; gillrakers 16-9. Dorsal fin a little shorter than anal fin and beginning somewhat behind anal fin origin; dorsal finrays 21-24, anal finrays 25-29. Vertebrae (pre-ural) 45-48. Colour: blackish. Size: to at least 22 cm.

Habitat: bathypelagic, mostly known from nets fishing at 1,300-2,000 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: isolated records around Madeira. Elsewhere, southward to 5° 30' S, also Indian Ocean and eastern Pacific.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
