Diagnosis: body moderately deep, compressed posteriorly, head large, more than one-third of body. Premaxillae not forming a plate-like 'visor'; upper gillrakers 3-5. Dorsal fin far back on body, its origin a little behind anal fin origin; anal fin longer than dorsal fin, with 21-28 finrays. Colour: brownish. Size: to 34 cm.
Habitat: engybenthic at about 1,200-2,600 m., usually below 2,000 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: spent females have been found in May with large ovarian eggs (to 3.9 mm in diameter).
Distribution: in deepwater off Morocco, the Azores and southern Portugal northward (including southern Bay of Biscay) to off south-western Ireland. Elsewhere, southward to 25° S, also Gulf of Mexico, Indian Ocean and Great Australian Bight.
