Diagnosis: body elongate, compressed posteriorly, its depth 4.4-6.7 times in SL. Premaxillae not forming a plate-like 'visor'; usually no upper gillrakers. Pyloric caeca 3 4. Dorsal fin far back on body, its origin well behind anal fin origin; anal fin base long, about 1 1/2 times dorsal base and with 27-28 finrays. Colour: brownish. Size: to 37 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic at 1,370-1,900 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: data.

Distribution: 2 specimens recently collected by A. A. Glukhov (PINRO, Murmansk) at 40° 03' N, 27°11' W at 1,880-1,900 m. Elsewhere, scattered records from South Atlantic (31° S, 3° E), Indian Ocean (11° 25' S, 88° 52' E) and Pacific (19° 49' N, 151° 48' E) (Sazonov, pers. comm.).
