Diagnosis: head profile fairly straight over eyes, the latter about equal to snout; tip of upper jaw reaching almost to hind border of eye. Gillrakers 7-9 + 1 + 19-25 = 27-34. Dorsal fin fairly far back on body, its origin well before anal fin origin and not far behind pelvic fin base; pectoral fin rays 15-17. Colour: brownish. Size: to at least 37 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic to bathypelagic, from trawls fished at 2,600-4,000 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: scattered records to the west of Portugal and to the southwest of Ireland. Elsewhere, western North Atlantic.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
