Diagnosis: head profile slightly curved over eye, the latter smaller thansnout, which projects a little beyond tip of lower jaw; tip of upper jaw reaching almost to hind border of eye. Gillrakers 5-6 + 1 + 14-17 = 20-23. Dorsal fin far back on body, its origin well before anal fin origin and only a little behind pelvic fin base; pectoral finrays 11-12. Colour: brownish. Size: to at least 40 cm.
Habitat: engybenthic, from trawls fished at 2,500-5,850 m, most commonly at 2,800-3,300 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: scattered records from off Morocco, south-west of th Azores and south- west of Ireland. Elsewhere, western Atlantic.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
