Diagnosis: body elongate, slender, a little compressed. Head moderate, but much greater than body depth; eye large, greater than snout in larger fishes; pointed conical knob at tip of lower jaw, underneath and pointing downward. Gillrakers 5-7 + 1+ 17-21 = 24-29. Dorsal fin origin in advance of anal fin origin. Vertebrae 31-32 + 19-20 = 50-51. Colour: brownish. Size: to at least 28 cm.

Habitat: larvae and juveniles of less than 90 mm bathypelagic at 250-3,182 m, adults possibly engybenthic at 820-1,425 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: from about the Azores northward to Iceland and southern Greenland. Elsewhere, eastern Atlantic to 22° S, western Atlantic from equator northward to 40° N; also eastern Pacific and Indian Oceans.
