Diagnosis: body fairly elongate and compressed, its greatest depth above pectoral fins. Head large, greater than body depth. Eye smaller than snout, its hind margin slightly behind midpoint of head; tip of upper jaw reaching to about front margin of eye; gillrakers 7 + 1 + 15-16 = 23-24. Pyloric caeca 14-15. Dorsal finrays 17, pectoral finrays 10, pelvic finrays 7, anal finrays 17, its origin slightly behind origin of dorsal fin.
Scales moderate, 58 in lateral line. Colour: brown (in alcohol). Size: to at least 43 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic over soft bottoms at 2,000-2,500 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: off Morocco (3 fishes at 35° 46' N, 8°16' W) and off southwestern Ireland. Elsewhere, western North Atlantic at two localities (20° and 39° N); possibly circumglobal, although confusion exists as to the number of species involved.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
