Diagnosis: vomerine tooth plate flat. Free gill arches 4, with slit behind ventral arm of 4th arch; gill rakers club-shaped; copular tooth plate 1. Dorsal finrays 19-22; anal finrays 1518. Numerous anal lappets joined in one scalloped flap over anal fin base. Lateral line pores 11-14, without flaps; lateral line scales flat, without dorsal or ventral points. Cavernous tissue anterior to anus and on upper caudal fin base. Vertebrae 38-42. Colour: dark brown or black. Size: to 130 mm SL.

Habitat: oceanic waters, bathypelagic, to at least 1400 m; smaller specimens mesopelagic, 650 m (nocturnal). Food: no data. Reproduction: all examined specimens more than 50 mm females (Paxton, 1989), few confirmed males less than 35 mm SL.

Distribution: Uncommon. In the area, 2 specimens to 41° N. Elsewhere, all oceans between 45° N and S.
