Diagnosis: dorsal and anal finrays 17-20. Lateral line pores 18-23; posterior lateral line flaps small to moderate. Cavernous tissue at dorsal and anal fin origins, sometimes extending under anterior rays, none elsewhere. 4th arch gill filaments tiny to small. Vertebrae 49-51. Colour: dark brown. Size: 59-150 mm SL.

Habitat: oceanic waters, bathypelagic, to at least 1250 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: rare. Known only from 2 types from Madeira/ Canaries, 5 previously unreported specimens from the northeastern Atlantic 18°-32° N, and 4 specimens from the Gulf of Mexico (Tolley et al., 1989).
