Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 10-11; anal+caudal finrays 84-93; pelvic fin 1 plus 0-3 rudimentary rays. Branchiostegal rays 7. Colour: brown. Size: to 2 m.

Habitat: benthic from 30-692 m. Food: ophiuroids and fishes (Barnard, 1948). Reproduction: largest specimens more than 1,500 mm females (Franca and Ferreira, 1967).

Distribution: in the area, two specimens, off north France, 48° N (Du Buit and Quero, 1989). Elsewhere along the west coast of Africa from Morocco, 31°N (Roule, 1929), to South Africa, 34° S (Barnard, 1948).

Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
