Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 12-14; anal finrays 10-12 (the former with 0-4 more rays than the latter); pectoral finrays 14-16 (one unbranched). Gillrakers 19-24 on first arch. Predorsal scales 39-47, usually 42-44. No palatine teeth. Colour: iridescent blue above, silvery below; dorsal fin grey, sometimes with black spot; pectoral fins greyish with pale posterior margin, with or without crossband; caudal fin lobes uniformly pigmented. Size: to 38 cm.

Habitat: epipelagic in nearshore waters; prefers water temperatures between 15° and 25° C. Food: zooplankton, small fishes. Reproduction: eggs with filaments over entire surface; juveniles characterized by a single fringed chin-barbel.

Distribution: from Cape Finisterre and the Azores southwards to Liberia. Elsewhere, in most subtropical waters.

Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus pinnatibarbatus: only subspecies in Clofnam area. Southwards to Liberia.
