Diagnosis: snout long, narrowing at nostrils, tip rounded, distance from nostril to mouth equal to mouth breadth. Pre-oral clefts three-quarters distance to symphysis. Upper teeth with single erect lanceolate cusp anteriorly, becoming oblique and triangular at the eighth row; lower teeth on broad base with broadly triangular cusp, becoming increasingly more oblique posteriorly, and a notch present at each side of base of cusp. Spiracle slightly above eye. First four gill openings sub-equal, fifth distinctly longer. Pectoral fins twice as long as broad, no distinct inner corner; tip of dorsal spines exposed, pelvic fin origin under second dorsal fin origin, not extending posteriorly past tip of second dorsal fin; caudal fin broad, tip truncate, lower lobe moderately developed. Colour: dark brown to golden. Size: to 900 mm.

Habitat: benthic on slopes, from 200 to 1,000 m. Food: ?fishes. Reproduction: ovoviviparous, young born larger than 250 mm.

Distribution: Morocco and Madeira northward to the Faroes and Iceland. Elsewhere, southward to Senegal; also, southern Pacific off New Zealand.

Eggs, embryonic and young stages. Garrick, 1959: 79, 88 (embryos).
