Diagnosis: upper teeth erect and symmetrical to nearly symmetrical along central part of jaw. Lower teeth with finely serrated cutting edges. Inner corner of pectoral fins elongated and narrowly pointed. First dorsal fin height and base length (measured from anterior origin of spine) 6.1-6.6% TL; first dorsal fin lower than second. Denticles on sides of body close-set, but not overlapping, without stalks, thorn-like, with median and two lateral ridges converging posteriorly. Colour: dark greyish-brown, slightly lighter ventrally. Size: to about 160 cm (female), 128 cm (males).

Habitat: benthic over slope, 400 1,400 m. Food: teleost fishes and squids. Reproduction: ovoviviparous, 1-6 embryos.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic northward to Portugal. Elsewhere, southward to Senegal; also, east coast of South Africa and possibly equatorial western Indian Ocean.
