Alopias superciliosus (Lowe, 1839)

Diagnosis: snout rather long; a deep horizontal groove on each side of nape; eyes large, reaching the dorsal surface of head; less than 25 rows of teeth in jaws. First dorsal fin closer to pelvic fins than to pectoral fins. Colour: back dark blue to purplish-grey, belly cream to grey, posterior edges of pectoral and pelvic fins dusky. Size: males to 4 m, females to 4.6 m TL.

Habitat: epipelagic, oceanic and coastal in warm temperate and tropical waters, from the surface to 475 m. Food: pelagic and bottom fishes and squids. Reproduction: ovoviviparous; number of young 2; size at birth probably about 100-130 cm.

Distribution: off Madeira, Portugal and Morocco, between 15° and 40° Elsewhere, warm temperate Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.
