Genus Grammicolepis

Grammicolepis Poey, 1873

Diagnosis: body very deep and compressed in young, less so with age. Mouth small, almost vertical, eye rather large; all 7 branchiostegal rays exposed and easily visible without dissection. Pelvic fin with I +6-9 finrays. dorsal and anal fin bases long (more than 30 spinous and soft finrays) the final finrays about opposite in young, but those of the dorsal becoming more anterior with age; anal fin preceded by 2 small strong spines. Scales present, small, vertically elongate, but no spiny keels on flanks; thin bony knobs with spines along entire bases of dorsal and anal fins. Colour: silvery, with irregular dark marks. Size: to 50 cm SL.

Habitat: in deep midwater or near bottom, from 250 to more than 900 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: off north-western coast of Spain and Morocco. Elsewhere, western Atlantic, also Pacific.
