Genus Syngnathus

Syngnathus Linnaeus, 1758

Superior trunk and tail ridges discontinuous near rear of dorsal fin, inferior trunk and tail ridges continuous, lateral trunk and tail ridges discontinuous near anal ring or continuous and confluent with superior tail ridge; body ridges distinct in sub-adults and adults. Opercle without a complete longitudinal ridge in sub-adults and adults, dorsal fin origin usually on trunk, pectoral and anal fins present, caudal finrays typically 10. Male brood area under tail, pouch plates and membranous folds present.
