Body compressed. Head with a long tubular snout and a small terminal mouth. Eye large, about half of the head height. 2 dorsal fins above the anal fin in the posterior part of the body. Second spine of the first dorsal fin longer than the others and denticulated. No scales on the body.
Gregarious fishes. Juveniles are pelagic and adults live close to bottom at a depth of 50-150 m.
