Genus Benthalbella

Benthalbella Zugmayer, 1911

Basihyal elongate, lingual teeth restricted to basihyal or at most 1 or 2 small teeth over anterior end of first basibranchial. Dorsal finrays 5-10; anal finrays 17-39; pectoral finrays 19-28; pelvic fin insertion in advance of vertical through origin of dorsal fin. Scales in lateral line 54-66. Vertebrae 54-65. Luminous tissue present (at least in B. infans). Dermal pigment stripes absent.
Larvae with an extremely slender, elongate body, lacking peritoneal pigment sections and accessory pigment spots or areas; they reach a lar size (50-90 mm SL) before the onset of metamorphosis.
