Genus Neoscopelus

Neoscopelus Johnson, 1863

Body fusiform, compressed; dorsal profile of head straight or only slightly concave; eye large; mouth large, terminal, jaws extending to or only slightly beyond vertical through posterior margin of eye. Origin of adipose fin in advance of vertical through last anal finray. Scales large, cycloid, deciduous. Swimbladder well developed. Luminous organs in single series on tongue; mid-ventral and bilateral rows of photophores on body.
Benthopelagic over continental and island slopes in tropical and subtropical waters.
