Genus Centrobranchus

Centrobranchus Fowler, 1904

Caudal peduncle moderately slender, its least depth 3 1/2 times or more in its length. Snout conical and protruding. Mouth moderately large, subterminal. Jaws extending about one eye diameter behind posterior margin of orbit. Gillrakers absent; gill arches with low protuberances bearing spines. Lateral line poorly developed. Dn and Vn present. PLO at about level of upper base of pectoral fin. Five PO, level. Four VO, level. AO divided into AOa and AOp, with interspace well in advance of end of base of anal fin. Two Prc, level. Males with supra-caudal gland, consisting of separate or partially overlapping luminous organs, bordered by black pigment. Females with infra-caudal gland, consisting of separate luminous structures.
High-oceanic, mesopelagic in tropical and subtropical waters of all three oceans; nyctoepipelagic at surface at night.

Species 4; in Clofnam area l; although C. andrae has been recorded in the Atlantic, it is probable that only C. nigroocellatus occurs in this ocean.
