Flatfishes with the eyes on the left side. Preopercular margin free. Large mouth with prominent lower jaw. Bases of both pelvic fins elongate. Benthic on the continental shelf. Feed on benthic invertebrates and small fish. Some species reach a sufficient size and are abundant enough to be important for fisheries.
