Genus Gymnelus

Gymnelus Reinhardt, 1834

Body naked, without scales. Mouth terminal; no crests on chin; lobes of lower lips well developed, separated in midline; teeth present on vomer and palatines. Gill opening small, to middle of pectoral fin base only. Pectoral finrays 10-12; pelvic fins absent. Infra-orbital and mandibular pores small, round, distinctly contoured; lateral line along midline of flank.

Species 4 or more; in Clofnam area 2.

Recent revisions: Anderson (1982); whole group badly needs study, including the closely related genera Gymnelopsis and Derjuginia of the Okhotsk Sea.
