Genus Stromateus

Stromateus Linnaeus, 1758

Medium-sized fishes with a deep, compressed body. Head deep, snout blunt, eye small and centrally located, gill membranes broadly united across isthmus. Caudal peduncle short and deep, compressed. Dorsal fin originating over pectoral fin; anal fin shorter, originating about under tip of pectoral fin, no visible spines in front of either fin; caudal fin broad and deeply forked; pelvic fins usually present in young specimens, inserting directly under pectoral fin base, but absent in specimens longer than about 10 cm. Lateral line slightly elevated, following the dorsal profile and extending onto the peduncle. Colour generally bluish on the back, often with darker spots, and whitish on the sides and below, overall with a silver cast.
