Oval-shaped fishes. Mouth small. Teeth incisiform with peculiar hockey-stick shape, their base set horizontally. Scales cycloid or ctenoid, often extending onto median fins. Dorsal single. Caudal more or less bilobed.
Oceanic and littoral, also in lagoons in tropical and subtropical seas.
Genera about 15; in Clofnam area 1.
