Sub-orbital papillae with 6 transverse rows, plus 1 papilla within pore 1; 4 rows before and 2 lower parts below longitudinal row b. No row a. Anterior and posterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present. Predorsal area and head naked. Anterior nostril tubular, without process from rim. Pectoral fin uppermost rays not free from membrane. Pelvic disc complete, or rear edge emarginate and anterior membrane reduced or absent. First dorsal fin usually VI. Scales in lateral series 27-42, ctenoid. Vertebrae 28.
Atlantic-Mediterranean species are cryptobenthic, chiefly encountered by aqualung diving.
