Body without scales. Large eyes. No preopercular spine, but simple spines on operculum and suboperculum. Two dorsals, pelvics jugular. D1 III; D2 12-15; A 13 (Clofnam area); anal finrays branched, last divided at base, P 23-27. Gill openings not reduced to pores. Lateral line present; no pores, only a broad channel.
Benthic, on muddy grounds in deep water, 150-600 m. Rare. Oviparous, pelagic eggs and larvae(?).
