Medium-sized to large fishes with the body very elongate, ribbon-like. Head short with a blunt snout; mouth large, oblique; acute teeth, sometimes caniniform, on jaws, none on vomer and palatines. Dorsal and anal fins long, almost as long as body, without true spines, both fins more or less joined to the pointed caudal fin; pectoral fins short; pelvic fins thoracic. Scales minute, cycloid, on body only.
Benthic, on continental shelf on muddy sand bottoms, between 15 and 200 m, in temperate and tropical seas. Often resting in burrow. Carnivorous (invertebrates). Eggs pelagic.
