Diagnosis: dorsal fin profile of uniform height. Dorsal finrays XII + 17; anal finrays III + 16-18. Vomerine teeth absent. Lateral line scales about 70. Colour: bluish-grey above, silvery white below. Snout and forehead bluish-black. A large, oval black blotch on caudal peduncle. Size: to 30 cm SL, usually 15-20 cm.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic from Madeira to Angola.
