Genus Seriola

Seriola Cuvier, 1816

Teeth in both jaws minute, in a broad band anteriorly, tapering posteriorly. Soft anal fin base distinctly shorter than soft dorsal fin base; pectoral fins shorter than pelvic fins. Spinous dorsal fin with 7 or 8 spines, which may become embedded in large fish; no finlets in dorsal or anal fins. Caudal peduncle grooves present. Lateral line slightly to moderately arched above pectoral fins, becoming straight posteriorly; no scutes.
Epipelagic to epibenthic species found in neritic to offshore waters from near the surface to at least 360 m, forming small to moderate schools and feeding primarily on other fishes.
