Genus Epigonus

Epigonus Rafinesque, 1810

Body elongate, fusiform. Posterior edge of preopercle not serrated. No canine teeth. First dorsal fin with 7-8 spines, second dorsal fin with 1 spine and 9-10 rays; anal fin with 2 spines and 9 rays. Scales ctenoid, large, deciduous, extending on occiput and covering basal part of soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins. Lateral line extending far onto caudal fin.
Bathybenthic on continental slope at about 100-1,200 m. Dioecious; no evidence of oral brooding.
