Aphyonus Gunther, 1878
Eyes small or not externally visible; mouth almost horizontal. Pectoral peduncle as long as broad, with 13-19 rays; pelvic fins present. Vertebral centra in adults rectangular or nearly so. Peritoneum dark blue, visible through body wall.
