Females of the well-separated genera have no outstanding characters in common. They can be distinguished from other ceratioids by the following combination of external characters: D 5-8; A 4-7; escal bulb without spines or denticles, no dorsal caruncles or photophore on second cephalic finray; no barbel; skin spines absent or minute (except in Spiniphryne). Males probably non-parasitic in most species (parasitic in Leptacantichthys); no teeth in jaws; denticular teeth present on tip of snout and lower jaw, fused at base except on lower jaw of Pentherichthys; eyes relatively small (diameter 5-6% SL in most specimens), lateral; olfactory organs large, anterior nostrils close together, opening forwards; skin naked.
