Deep-bodied and thickset fishes reaching up to 1.8 m in length. Mouth protrusible, small, toothless. Dorsal and anal fins long-based, dorsal fin with a high lobe at the front; pectoral fins large, falcate, horizontally inserted; pelvic fins also falcate, slightly behind level of pectoral fins. Scales minute, cycloid, deciduous. Lateral line present.
Pelagic, cosmopolitan. Feeding on small fishes and invertebrates, mainly cephalopods.
