Genus Apletodon

Apletodon Briggs, 1955

Body moderately depressed anteriorly; head more or less triangular in dorsal outline, snout only slightly produced. Head moderately depressed, length 2.3-2.8 and width 2.6-3.7 times in SL. Teeth at front of each jaw small, rounded incisors, followed on each side by 1-3 well-developed canines, followed in turn by a row of small conical teeth. Six shallow, blunt rakers on third gill arch. Median fins comparatively short. Dorsal finrays 5-8; anal finrays 5-7; caudal finrays 10-12; pectoral finrays 18-25. Disc medium, length 3.3-4.1 times in SL. Anus surrounded by 18-20 fleshy papillae forming a noticeable cluster; these structures present in both sexes but better developed in males. No spine in subopercular region. Vertebrae 29-32.
